SS Chief Ourey: This 441 foot long WW II Liberty Ship was named in his honor. The vessel was launched on December 28, 1943 by the Permanente Metals Corp. in Richmond, CA. The ship was acquired by the US Navy, renamed USS Deimos AK-78, and commissioned on 23 January 1943. The proud new ship transported vital supplies to US and Allied Forces during WW II in the South Pacific. Unfortunately, the vessel was torpedoed on 22 June 1943 by enemy submarine RO-103, was severely damaged, and was destroyed by USS O'Bannon.
Native-American Ute Chief Ouray (1833-1880). He was born in Taos, NM and learned several languages. He was able to negotiate with US Government officials and hoped to secure a treaty so his adopted tribe could stay in Colorado. Unfortunately, following the Meeker Massacre the tribes were forced to move to a reservation in Utah. His leadership is still of great pride in his nation. (see web sites for detail of his life, including trips to Washington, DC).
Seller has covers for over 200 different Liberty Ships named for famous Americans.
