    Description

SS BILLY MITCHELL memorial Liberty Ship first day cover, postmarked at Kansas
City on Jan 27, 2019. Blue portrait printed on Cachet #9067 by Alvin Eckert #9964, USCS.
US Army Air Corps General William Mitchell a First World War pilot, became an
upstart, controversial, early advocate of Air Power. He was court marshalled for his
actions to jump-start the American military air program. He understood global warfare,
and predicted the air attack on Pearl Harbor. He was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1946.
The 441 foot SS Billy Mitchell was built by the California Shipbuilding Corp. and delivered
on June 17, 1943. The proud new ship transported vital supplies to US and Allied Forces
overseas during WW II. The vessel survived the war and was recycled for scrap metal in 1965.
Cover franked with a 55 cent Billy Mitchell stamp (Sc # 3330) and a 55 cent US flag stamp (FDOI).
